3 Common Types of Chronic Wounds

Chronic wounds are wounds that do not heal in the expected amount of time. Three types are especially common. Here is a simple overview of each.

Venous ulcers

Venous ulcers are often related to poor blood flow in the leg veins, where blood does not return to the heart efficiently and pressure builds up in the lower leg.[1]

They usually appear on the lower leg, often near the ankle. The surrounding skin may be swollen, discolored, or itchy, and the wound may weep fluid.

Diabetic foot ulcers

Diabetic foot ulcers can develop in people living with diabetes, where reduced sensation and reduced circulation in the feet mean a small injury may go unnoticed and take longer to heal.[1]

They commonly appear on the bottom of the foot or on the toes. Because feeling may be reduced, a daily visual check of the feet is often recommended.

Pressure ulcers

Pressure ulcers, sometimes called bed sores, can form when sustained pressure on one area of skin limits blood flow to that area, often in people who spend long periods in a bed or chair.[1]

They tend to appear over bony areas such as the heels, hips, tailbone, and elbows. Early signs can include a change in skin color or a warm, tender patch.

When to have a wound looked at

  • A wound that is not showing improvement over several weeks.
  • Increasing pain, swelling, odor, or drainage.
  • Any new open area on the foot for a person living with diabetes.

Only a licensed provider can evaluate a wound and recommend treatment. Mobile Wound Care can help you request an appointment with an independent, licensed mobile wound care provider in your area.
